Joyce Lee
Writer, Producer, Actor
Joyce Lee is a Chicago native and graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, where she earned an MFA in Acting. Joyce is an emerging producer, writer, and director who reimagined a real-life account into Essence of Innocence, a film that invites audiences to feel and reflect. Her work invites others to reflect on the sufferings of the world and join in the conversation.
As a writer and director, Joyce created Nino and the Principal’s Daughter, a play exploring peer pressure that toured middle schools across Los Angeles County. Her stage production The Dean’s Office premiered at the Hollywood Fringe Festival and won the Best of Broadwater Theatre. She also directed Freedom Child, a powerful drama based on Dr. Bernadette McAllister’s childhood experiences marching in The Children’s Crusade in Birmingham, Alabama, where she faced the brutal force of Bull Connor.
Joyce was awarded the William and Eva Fox Fellowship to study in Ghana, where she produced and directed The Ethnic Groups of Ghana. A member of SAG-AFTRA, AEA, and The Actors Studio, she also served as co-chair to the Black Association of Documentary Filmmakers West.
Joyce continues to teach, perform, and create—with her current focus on completing a documentary highlighting the untold stories of founding members of the Nation of Islam.
